Micro-gerotor pump for micro-gerotor pummp for environmental and life science applications.

Contact: P.J. Gamez-Montero  pedro.javier.gamez@ucp.edu
The technology of gerotor pumps progresses towards an important number of sectors such as life science, industrial and mechanical engineering. This remarkable growth is based on its three main advantages: simplicity, versatility and performance. Moreover, recent paradigm, as environmental concerns, shifts in the industry in additional applications leading to growing demand for pumps that can improve their efficiency.
This project is devoted to apply our own developed technology to the micro-pumps in the environmental area and be extended for many microsystems applications, among others, automotive, medical, life sciences, energy, industrial, food industry, aerospace, medical dosing, additives, inkjet heads, flow sensors and active mixing. Here, the fluid-dynamic field is the most time-proven application whereby the mini/micro-pumps develop a key role: to produce the fluid movement.
The flow characteristics and the volumetric efficiencies as well as the pump-driving torque characteristics and the mechanical efficiencies help to qualify the design of the pump and to assess the quality of numerical simulations, data concerning volumetric characteristics, leakage and fluid-dynamic performance.
Then, the aim of this proposal is to carry out a comprehensive fluid-dynamic study of a new concept of micro gerotor oil pump, which has been designed and a first prototype has been manufactured. At different extents, several techniques are proposed to conduct this study by following this procedure:
1. Analytical methodology, by using the GeroLAB software and GeroLAB package system.
2. Dynamic modelling, by using the Bond Graph technique.
3. Fluid-dynamic numerical simulation, by using OpenFOAM, a free open source CFD software package. The numerical simulations will be performance in our own 64 processors cluster and could also be performed in a Supercomputer.
4. Contact stress and Deformation numerical simulation, by using Code_Aster, another free open source software package for structural engineering. By being open, OpenFOAM and Code_Aster offer users complete freedom to customize and extend its existing functionality.
5. Experimental work, in order to validate the modelling and the numerical by using our current available instrumentation, DAQ and test benches.
6. Results analysis, discussion and conclusions
Finally, this project is clearly oriented to the dissemination and exploitation results to the industry, to the strengthening of the generation of knowledge and the collaboration to the commercialization of the product. Moreover, the internationalization and projection of the project results will promote the interaction with other research groups.

Froth Generation through plunging jet

Contact: Roberto Castilla castilla@mf.upc.edu

This project aims to develop a CFD model to numerically reproduce the forth generation in pakage filling processes, including its correlation and validation with experimental tests.
A first model has been already developed based on OpenFOAM, which has been correlated. The project will start from this model and will evolve it by solving numerical issues and by adding more parameters to maximize the accuracy. Experimental data is avaliable and if necessary more experimental tests can be done.
